Following a basic approach epitomized by ‘Development for Peace’ the key objective of the project is to “Promote a peaceful coexistence between divergent groups in some of these areas” by undertaking development activities which would address conflict over livestock routes and natural resources, lack of employment and limited income generating activities. Project beneficiaries include farmers and nomads along a number of transhumance routes; women and youth and the wider communities in the target areas.

SUDIA has been awarded a contract by the World Bank/Federal Ministry of National Economy of Sudan for the delivery of peace building activities targeting the conflict-affected regions of Darfur and the Three Areas in Sudan. Services to be delivered aim to alleviate localised conflict between settled and nomad communities relating to resource competition and build peace through capacity building of Civil Society Institutions (CSIs), facilitating dialogue to support the equitable use and development of shared resources, and improving the livelihoods of communities in the project areas.

Two out of three Future Search Conferences completed
Wednesday, January 18, 2012

Week 2 2012 SUDIA and representatives from the Future Search Network went to Darfur in order to carry out the Future Search Conferences in all three states aiming to bring people together in search for common ground. Each conference was meant to last for three days. After the first one was successfully conducted and concluded in Al Fashir, North Darfur, the team split into two, of which one group headed West and one South. The conference in Nyala, South Darfur was a positive, enlightening and enriching experience for all participants, but the one in Geneina, West Darfur, was never allowed to unfold. In the preparation phase the team in the West was unexpectedly shut down by National Security. Nevertheless, two thirds of the Future Search component of the World-Bank funded Sudan Peace building for Development Project, have been implemented successfully. They will hopefully bear fruits for the communities in Darfur who now have had the opportunity to discuss the problems they face. The hope is that conflicts may be prevented or resolved in the future and that collective action for peaceful coexistence and development along the traditional livestock routes has been established.
